A BALM TO CURE BALDNESS
In an Indian village,
a salesman of indigenous drugs was eloquently explaining the excellence and
effectiveness of his herbal remedies. He was wearing a huge hat and had several
bottles filled with his herbal drugs displayed all around him. Holding up a
bottle of a balm, he declared that it was a divine drug to cure baldness and
hair loss. He said that he received its secret recipe from a holy hermit
staying in a hermitage in the Himalayan mountain ranges. He claimed that the rare
ingredients of the miraculous medicine
were collected from the deep forests of the Himalayas. He promoted the sale of
his balm and several bald men listened to his lecture with rapt attention.
Suddenly and unexpectedly a strong storm blew
around the area. It carried away a lot of dust and dry leaves and also the
large hat of the salesman. The crowd was surprised and soon roared with
laughter to see the bare head of the salesman. It was completely bald! The
people asked the salesman, "Why didn't you apply it on your bald head
before supplying it to us?"
Let
us be ready to practise before preaching. St. Paul advises, “Put into practice
what you learnt and received from me, both from my words and from my actions”
{Philippians 4: 9}. St. Paul says,
“Imitate me, then, just as I imitate Christ” {1 Corinthians 11: 1}
Jesus said,” I have set an example for
you, so that you will do just what I have done for you” {John 13: 15}. Jesus warns against the
teachers of the law and the Pharisees, “So you must obey and follow everything
they tell you to do; do not, however, imitate their actions, because they don’t
practise what they preach {Matthew, 23: 3}.
