ABORTION - AN ATROCITY AGAINST THE UNBORN
The 'Sunday shalom', a weekly news paper
from India, reported this incident from Nilambur in Kerala, South India, in its
issue dated 3 February, 2013:
Mrs. Ambily was married to Mr. Sumesh in 2011.They were
travelling in a motorcycle, 20 days after their marriage. They collided against
a truck and Sumesh died on the spot. Ambily was admitted to a large hospital
with multiple injuries. Her whole body was badly bruised and she had fractures
in the hip and legs.
She had to undergo
four surgical operations and several investigations using X-rays. She was administered a large number of drugs during
the treatment. It was after a month that she was found to be pregnant. The
doctors advised her to eliminate the unborn child by an abortion. They were of
the opinion that the drugs and X-rays to which she was exposed after the
accident might have damaged the fetus. In their view the child had high chances
of being disabled and handicapped.
Many relatives and friends supported the
suggested abortion advising her that the child would be a burden in the event
of a second marriage. They also indicated the difficulties in bringing up a
child born with severe deformities.
The young mother was
in a dilemma. She sought refuge in prayers. Finally she announced her bold
decision that under any circumstance she would not kill her innocent infant.
She was ready to accept the child as a gift of the loving God. She was sure
that a mother should not be a murderer. She should be the guardian angel of her
child.
Ultrasonography did not show any definite
deformities in the fetus. But the doctors were sceptical about her chances to
deliver a normal baby. In due course she delivered the baby and by the grace of
God, it was a perfectly normal and healthy child. She thankfully named her
child, 'MARIA' acknowledging the intercession of Holy Mary in the miraculous
gift of the child. The mother and child remain as a living testimony to the
truth that life is a gift of God.
Mother Teresa said, "
I feel that the greatest destroyer of peace today is abortion, because it is a
war against the child, a direct killing of the innocent child, murder by the
mother herself. By abortion, the mother does not learn to love, but kills even
her own child to solve her problems. And for this I appeal in India and I
appeal everywhere - "Let us bring the child back." The child is God's
gift to the family. Each child is created in the special image and likeness of
God for greater things - to love and to be loved. We are fighting abortion by
adoption - by care of the mother and adoption for her baby. We have saved
thousands of lives. Let us make that one point - that no child will be
unwanted, unloved, uncared for, or killed and thrown away."
The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches
about Abortion: (2270).. Human life must be respected and protected
absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his
existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person --
among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life. (2271).. Since
the first century the Church has affirmed the moral evil of every procured
abortion. This teaching has not changed and remains unchangeable. Direct
abortion, that is to say, abortion willed either as an end or a means, is gravely
contrary to the moral law.
The march of modern man to progress and
prosperity is marred by the murder of innumerable innocent infants under the
pretext of a medical procedure - 'Medical Termination of Pregnancy' (M.T.P), which
in reality is a brutal butchery of the unborn baby.
The living fetus cannot be ignored as an
insignificant tiny tissue. It is essentially a lovely bud of a living human
being, craving for the loving care and the tender touch of human kindness. When
this bud of life falls a victim to the selfishness of the parents, brutal tools are thrust into the
throbbing heart of the tiny child -to silence it - in an act of violence. The
child is denied even the right to shed a drop of tear or to cry aloud as a mark
of protest or to breathe the last breath of a puff of free air!
Can a woman forget her own baby and not love the child she bore? That is what happens when a mother agrees to kill her unborn innocent infant by abortion. Even if a mother should forget her child, God will never forget the child. Persons who have directly or indirectly co-operated in an act of abortion should repent for their cruel action and seek God's mercy to forgive their sin. They should devote their life to love and serve the poor, little children, as a mark of their repentance.
